Hundred years old train tracks running through the heart of Hanoi’s old town. The truly interesting element is that the streets are so narrow on either side of the tracks, that the trains only just sneak through and everybody has to rapidly clear the path on their arrival.
I sat at one of the cafes that line the tracks and the cafe owners kept insisting that the train would pass through in “5 minutes” but this ended up stretching out indefinitely. I began to wonder if indeed a train was coming at all and this was actually an ingenious marketing tactic to keep customers in cafes. Either way, it definitely worked as the cafes and bars were busy! I did in fact see a train pass through in the end but on reflection this image, without any train in sight, is my clear favourite as it captures my memory of the evening perfectly…
